What do South Koreans think about North Koreans?

Although Korea has a relatively homogeneous culture, there isn't a cookie cutter answer to how South Koreans feel about North Korea.
There are multiple layers of emotions and feelings and they range on where you live, your age and your background. A grandma living along the DMZ is probably going to feel more strongly about the conflict than a 15 year old living on Jeju island (southern most area of Korea).

Great answer, thank you. I was stationed in the ROK for one year in 1977 and I’ve had an interest in the peninsula ever since.
Thank you also, your answer gives great insight into the sentiments of both nations.
Good point. The separation was/is a foreign decision. It is possible that the North Koreans are brainwashed to think badly of South Korea, but deep down they must know that we are family.
Most of South Koreans I know through Internet chatting will always remember North Korea and North Koreans as their respective brothers, cousins and sisters.
They have together been in the history of them. Of course, they understand, how painful the past is.
Same in Vietnam, Korea was divided. By Vietnam was later, gone to commies. Korea remains divided, and this hurt every Koreans.
Koreans does not look at Vietnam with envy.
I agree with you on Korea, but I think you're way too critical of Vietnam. Vietnam was forced to turn to Com...ism because no one wanted to help them win independence except the USSR. Ho Chi Minh asked for US aid but they were supporting France.
And Vietnam is changing, there are bright times ahead hopefully. South Korea was also once poorer than Africa, but look at them now. With honesty, patriotism and hard work Vietnam can become like them too.
There are no miracles, but a concentracted effort of the nation's best and brightest will undoubtedly make a difference in both Vietnam and Korea.
Vietnam turned to Com...ism because it was the com...sts who had won the Vietnam War.
That’s essentially what he said. And if the West, particularly the US, had “done the right thing”, the outcome could have been very different. It was interesting that the US was so insistent that the UK should relinquish its empire, but they seem never to have applied the same pressure to France.

I found Harry Truman really weird. So the man, tried to stop the spread of Com...ism, but he did not support the KMT during the Chinese Civil War or help Vietnam to gain independence.

Like many answers above, many South Koreans do pity the ordinary North Koreans and hate, HATE Kim - there are many unpleasant comments on Kim Jong-un (ranging from criticizing his obesity to his regime) on NAVER, Korean equivalent for Google. Sometimes this happens to an extent where under a totally unrelated article, Kim is mentioned in one of the comments and becomes the most popular comment even.
Recently, a poll in Korea indicated that over 60% of middle & high school students in Korea supported unification of SK and NK. But this is something to discuss at another time.
My South Korean girlfriend freaked out when she found out how interested I was in North Korea. South Koreans are taught that North Koreans are dangerous and will kidnap them and force them to the North. After a while I persuaded her to accompany me to the DPRK embassy in Jakarta and she was extremely well received. Some staff had tears in their eyes when they talked to her.

Generally speaking, we obvisouly hate the regime but feel sorry for the people who are suffering like no other. Others? Probably indifferent since we have been separated for too long.
I am guessing (since I have not met one myself) that North Koreans outside their country are taught to keep low profile.
It doesn't help that official North Korean propaganda says that theirs is the only legitimate government for the whole Korean peninsula. Basically, in North Korea, it's not called "North Korea", it's just "Korea". To say otherwise would be considered treasonous. So, loyal North Koreans would simply call themselves "Korean".
One thing I disagree is that many of South Koreans think North Korea as a threat, especially those who experienced the war or military training. It's pretty unknown that there are military conflicts that happen quite often between two countries.
When there is news says North Korea threaten South, people in the society usually think it's another repeated boring headline, while millions of young soldiers are preparing for emergencies under the ground.
I have served two tours in the USAF in South Korea. The last one I spend one year at the Monterey CA Defense Language School and I learn Korean so I could adequately understand and read. I served one year as a joint staff officer serving both commanders (UN and South Korean). My impression of the ROK military is that they chomp at the bit to get at the North Koreans. They are stronger, more motivated, and more intelligent now then ever before. They make their own M1 tank called the K1. The ROKAF maintains a mix of F16 and F15 aircraft far superior to anything the Hermit kingdom has. They don't need the UN or US to help them anymore. Release them and they will reunify the peninsula themselves in two weeks.
thank you for your service
Release them and Seoul doesn’t exist anymore thanks to artillery on the DMZ, plus a few nukes on a few other parts of the South should ensure mutual destruction.
North Korea’s nukes are a joke, if they even get off the ground, South Korean’s missile defense system can shoot them down because they are very slow. Meanwhile, South Korea has twice the population of North Korea, an economy 50 times bigger, and more advanced tech. In a conventional war, North Korea will be outnumbered, out gunned, out technologied, and out spent.
Yes the US has trained them well, as they did between 1945 and 1950. The people in the South were terrified of them. Yet they turned tail and ran when they saw the North Koreans in 1950, leaving all the new tanks, equipment and supplies they had on the border ready for their invasion of the North. The KPA though all their Christmases had come at once.
South Korea did not have any tanks in 1950
They retreated so fast that they overtook the Americans heading south too.
Generally speaking, they would rather choose to avoid discussion of it.
First of all, in their eyes, North Korea is a unreasonable place. No one can go there and no one can come out. Many disputes are almost provoked by them.
And their unreason more embody in national absolute feverish, unidentify truth, and the mass is blinded by leaders.
their attitude makes me feel exactly it's really two countries.
Best summary may be indifference rather than detesting.
I'm not Korean but my colleagues who are from there feel sorry for the people of North Korea because they were unfortunate enough to be born in such a repressive regime. They hate the government, not the people. North Koreans, to most South Koreans, are still Koreans and, therefore, are still their brothers and sisters.
